Join Chromosome 18 Registry & Research Society's official Fiesta and health conscious fundraising event.  Our goal is to bring together health-minded people to run, walk, become a spirit runner (virtual participation) and volunteer to raise awareness and money for our organization's mission of helping people with chromosome 18 abnormalities overcome the obstacles they face so they may lead happy, healthy and productive lives. We are proud that the leading global research center for chromosome 18 is based right here at UT Health San Antonio and is celebrating 26 years of cutting-edge research. We raise funds for this research through our organization. The more funds we raise, the faster the research center can develop treatments to improve the lives of those affected by chromosome 18 conditions which include many cognitive and physical impairments. We also offer support for families & physicians of children with chromosome 18 abnormalities.

This is a great Fiesta event is for all ages and the entire family can participate. The approximate two mile course leads you through the UT Health campus and easy parking is available. Why is our event called the "Starfish Dash"?

The starfish has been our unofficial mascot as our Founder and President, Jannine Cody, Ph.D., recites the following story at each annual conference as it shows that anyone and everyone can make a difference - small or large, all you have to do is have the energy and heart.

A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance, as he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things into the ocean. As the man approached even closer, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time he was throwing them back into the water. The man asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied," I am throwing these washed up starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die through lack of oxygen. "But", said the man, "You can't possibly save them all, there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can't possibly make a difference." The boy smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, "Made a difference to that one“.
